Most valuable players in Brazil
Flamengo managed to defend their Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A title recently in one of the most dramatic title races in the league’s history. Despite losing their final game, the Rubro-Negra finished one point ahead of Internacional, who were not able to claim the needed victory over Corinthians. For Flamengo, it is not only the second consecutive league title but also the seventh Brasileirão trophy in total. In line with many other Brazilian sides, Flamengo develop some of the world’s biggest talents, who often find their way into Europe’s top flights. Our analysis shows the top 5 players by market value, currently under contract in Brazil’s first division.
Gabriel Veron leads the list with a market value of EUR 31m. The winger has not only won the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores with his club Palmeiras recently but is also reportedly on the wish list of some of the most prominent European clubs. Nicknamed ‘Bolt’, the 18-year old helped Brazil win the 2019 FIFA Under-17 World Cup and was awarded the Golden Ball of the tournament. Veron is also the player with the highest market value increase (+ EUR 6m) in Brazil’s top-flight since our last evaluation in December 2020.
He is followed by Gabriel ‘Gabigol’ Barbosa, who boasts EUR 28m in market value and started his career at Santos. After short spells in Europe at Inter Milan and SL Benfica, where the forward never fully got into shape, he returned to Brazil and re-joined Santos on loan in January 2018. After finishing the season as the top scorer in both the Brazilian league and cup, he joined Flamengo – still on loan from Inter. In January 2020, Flamengo made his signing permanent for a reported transfer fee of EUR 18m.
Gremio’s Matheus Henrique sits in third place of our ranking with a market value of EUR 21m. After having acquired the central midfielder in 2018, Gremio have even held training sessions behind closed doors to protect him from European scouts, who perceived the playmaker as a potential transfer target.
The list is concluded by further two Flamengo midfielders, both boasting just below EUR 20m in market value. Uruguayan attacking midfielder de Arrascaeta is the only non-Brazilian player in this ranking, having spent all of his professional career in South America. On the other hand, Gerson has already made experiences in Europe’s elite football, having played for Italian Serie A sides AS Roma and AFC Fiorentina.
