A recent study by FIFPRO, the worldwide organisation representing professional footballers, prepared in coordination with KPMG Football Benchmark, provides a detailed overview of the required cross-continental player travel in the upcoming 2022 World Cup qualifiers in South America. During the week-long window, each national team is scheduled to play twice, one game home and one away: the 251 players will have to travel in and out of countries with some of the highest incidence of the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, many of them playing in Europe, the US or Mexico will have to travel between continents to join their national team. The study reveals that the upcoming matches feature risk for players due to the significant travel burdens during Covid19 times.
